The fourth Monday of September is Family Day. Family is one of the most important aspects of my life. I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for my family. When I say “Family”, I don’t simply mean my parents, siblings, and other relatives. Growing up in my house, friends were family. My parents are still friends with the people they knew as children. Those people were, and still are, huge influencers of my life.
Most of my friends from growing up are still major parts of my life. I may have moved hundreds of miles away, but when I get together with those friends, it’s like no time has passed. If any of them needed me, I would drop everything for them, because that’s what you do for family.
When I found The Curious George Store, I immediately felt like a part of their family. Through the years, we had some ups and downs, but we stuck together through it all. As new people have come and gone through the store, each and every one has felt like family. Choosing to leave New England and head south was a hard decision, but I knew my family, all of my families, would support the decision because it was the best thing for me at the time.
I have been extremely fortunate that in each stage of my life, I have been surrounded by people I was able to consider family. With each move and new job, I have accumulated people that I don’t know how I managed without.
Take some time out of your day today to do something with your family. Have dinner at the table. Play a game. Go for a walk. Call your parents. Spend time with the people you love. And don’t wait a year for the next “Family Day”. Why not start a monthly or weekly Family Day?
